Your age and your horse

I just thought of when parents sometimes get kids their first pet maybe a puppy or a kitten and let them grow up together. Makes me wonder if other people will do the same for a horse, or even if a horse age/person age combo is needed. Any takers on this one?

I think it would be a fine idea to do this. If a child grows up with a horse, it would seem to me that the horse might always be gentle and easy for that child to work with as they grow up together. It might not always be the case, but it makes sense to me!

Most honest breeders will tell you that putting a green horse and a green rider together is like mixing oil and water. Its usually dangerous to boot as the child doesn't have the skills to handle a green horse more often than not based on similar ages. Buying a well schooled pony is a much better "first horse" and should the child still be interested after 5+ years of riding and instruction in how to handle green horses and training then I might think about buying a younger animal.

Question

On this subject of age - just out of curiosity and lack of knowledge on this subject - what is the normal or average life expectancy of a domestic horse? If a parent does choose to bring a horse into a young child's life - depending on the horse's age at that entry point - would the horse live long enough to accompany the child into adulthood? I'm just thinking about the trauma of losing a pet and for some reason, a horse seems like a lot more than 'just a pet'

I tend to see more people that have grown up around a horse to appreciate it a little more and then end up having them for the rest of their lives. I see some others that will get a horse as an adult and not have the bond so tight.
