Who here can draw?

I have seen only a few people that can draw horses, always sketched. I wish I had this talent, they would be amazing to have made in any setting. I think I might start my hand work at painting again, but I cant draw a straight line with a ruler. Least with canvas I can manipulate more than with a pencil.

Drawing a straight line with a ruler is harder than it sounds sometimes. I used to draw horses when I was younger but I never seem to have the time these days. My mom bought me one of those "How to Sketch Horses" books to help with making them look normal but I just wasn't as good as I wanted to be.

On the DVD for the animation movie Spirit the director of art has a great tutorial on how to draw Spirit. He goes step by step and shows how to build a horse. It seems that horses are basically circles all connected together.

Drawing is not a very complicated thing. You just have to let your feelings and emotions flow through your hands and fingers. Today's art doesn't have to be with specific measurements. Its all about expressing something that is inside you and you want it out.

I just would like to have a meaning on these words: sketching, drawing, painting. Are they all the same? My idea is that they are different from each other. Sketching uses only a pencil or a charcoal. Drawing can use colorful crayons and pencils to make an art. While Painting uses a canvass and much more elaborate than sketching and drawing.

I could not do any of these 3 but I could do the connect-the-dots drawing of a horse.

Anytime I have attempted to draw any type of animals, I always end up getting the proportions wrong. I can draw more non nature than real life, if that makes any sense.

Sketching tends to be rougher than a proper drawing and uses pencil/charcoal/ink. Often it is used to capture an idea or start the outline for a painting to be covered with paint later on.

Drawing is usually much more refined and may be formed from an initial sketch. It tends to be done in pencil or colored pencil/marker.

Painting uses a wet media such as watercolors, acrylic, or oil paints. Watercolor pencils can also be used to make a drawing then made a painting by applying water.

I used to do a bit of drawing when I was younger and had time and the margin of my notebook in school. But not now as I get really busy and would rather a long shower than a drawing session.
