What's the biggest horse you've heard of?

Recently, I read of a horse who stood at over 6feet tall! He was a cart horse, I think. I also read of the smallest horse which stood at 17 inches and she was called Thumbelina. She was really cute!

Do you know of a very big or very small horse?

The tallest horse according to the Guinness book of world records is an English Shire called Tina. She stands at 20.1 hands-or 6' 7" tall. At the time of the record she was still young, and still growing but I see no update since.

I've known several 6ft draft horses over the years. I would love to be able to meet Tina as she sounds like a lovely horse. And being a draft she's probably less likely to squish you than some of the bigger WBs I've known.

I tried to find out about Tina from Tennessee but there doesn't appear to be an update on whether or not she is the biggest horse - but an article in a UK paper does mention that Tina had been 'confirmed' at the World's biggest horse

I guess we'd need to buy a copy of The Guinness Book of Records to be sure.

I was reading again about Britain's biggest horse (mentioned above) called Cracker and it says that, in human years, he's the equivalent of a teenager and he's proving it because he's still growing and never has his head out of the fridge!

I think the biggest breed, at least on average, is the Shire. Unfortunately they're not that common because being so big makes them hard to feed and there's not much use for the breed these days with tractors driving around.

The only thing I know about Shires is from when I was a little girl. We used to have a Fruit & Veg man (a traveling grocer who bought his produce to our homes) who drove a horse and cart - the horse being a Shire. I was about 5 at the time so, obviously, the horse was enormous to me!

I vividly remember that occasionally, the Fruit & Veg man would allow a few of us kids to sit astride Buddy the horse and he'd lead the horse gently up the road and back. My little legs were practically in the sideways 'splits' position because of the breadth of the horse.

Happy memories.
