Water Trough in the Field?

The water trough we have in the field at the barn near me got broken by the backhoe (some people need to learn to drive and watch where you drive) and they have been discussing the different merits and cost of different types of water troughs such as metal, rubber, a bathtub, etc. I was wondering if anyone had a preference or a reason they used the type they do?
