With spring in full gear and summer right around the corner most stables are working on spring cleaning, reorganizing, trail maintenance, etc. This is a great time to get to a local rescue or organization to ask about how to help out when they may most need it. Organize a trail cleaning/marking weekend, or a tack cleaning party, or hayloft sweeping day to help out. Convince a local business to donate some snacks or someone to provide entertainment such as a band or music to entice people to hang out and have fun.

I found three organizations within easy driving distance of me. I've emailed each of them to ask about volunteer opportunities on Friday. I'm hoping to hear back from at least one soon. I was frank with them about my lack of experience but having always dreamed of horses. There must be something a newbie can do and that way I'll gain experience with horses at the same time.

I think its a great idea to volunteer if you are able to and its even better if you can get some local kids involved so they can learn a little too. Maybe something like a spring field trip for them would work?

I don't know of too many places where you can volunteer here in Illinois. The only place I am aware of is the Illinois Horse Fair but the fair ended in back in March. So now I'll just have to keep looking.
