Vets

Does anyone have any good tips to pick a vet? The aunt is looking for a new one right now as shes not pleased with the current one (he seems like he is in the wrong line of work). Is it the same you look for when picking your own doctor?

I suggest that you ask for pet owners. If they have a common vet then that vet is likely to be a very good one. Getting a doctor and a vet is not that different, but on vets it is better to ask from other pet owners.

Can she ask around at a local stable? Even if she doesn't use a stable herself then she can ask them who they would recommend and they are likely to have had a lot of contact or experience with them.

First thing I'd do is ask around. Word of mouth really is the best form of advertisement. Then I'd set up an appointment and let my pet get to know him. How does he react to the animal? Is he calm and gentle, or fearful and antsy? And how do you get along with them?

The only way to know if you like a vet is to give it a shot, basically do an interview the first time in.

Word of mouth is how I've always found my vets. I trust hearing someone else's opinion of the vet. Do ask people what they've had done for their horse with the current vet!

Opinions of other horse owners and stable care takers are very much reliable way of knowing the good vet to choose. They normally would recommend one or two good vets in the town. Try to ask for at least 3 to 5 horse owners for a good reference.

I am not sure where the closest stable is, many people here have their horses on their own land as majority are for farm use. I am thinking she might check around and maybe get a recommendation from the local SPCA (they rescue horses too).

Really as others said, not only recommendation but meeting the vet is hugely important. If the vet is well recommended then that should mean they have a decent 'bedside manner' but isn't always so. You also have to get on with them yourself as you will be having a lot to do with them, so a face to face meeting is important.
