Vet Exam Before Purchase

How do you feel about getting a vet to exam the horse you want to purchase before buying it? Do you think that it is important or not neccessary?

Absolutely essential. Its not that sick horses don't deserve a good home but that I simply am not financially set up to pay out hand over fist right from the get go! I can handle normal health issues, but some horses just need more attention than I can financially give.

Unless you have years of experience in horses, their structures and buying/selling and know what to look for as obvious signs of muscular skeletal issues you should always have the horse vetted. If you purchase the horse many sellers may subtract this fee from the price or be willing to furnish their own set of papers taken recently to show leg/hoof structure or any known injuries.

I always have my horse checked by my own vet. Sometimes breeders will have health reports to show you that are done by their own vets. Unless the breeder is someone I know and trust, I always have my own vet check any animal I am planning to purchase.

Well you wouldn't really want to buy a new horse only to find out it has chronic laminitis and you're going to have to deal with that too.
