Training for training?
Maybe it's just spring fever, but I'm in love with all things baby right now and I've been thinking how I'd like to learn to train a baby. I've never had a young, untrained horse, so it'd be completely new for me. For those who have done it, how did you learn? Any books or training courses you took?

I learned slowly through the advice and teachings of my instructor who has been breeding and training horses her entire life. I had to gradually go from lesson horses to less well trained horses to youngsters (5-6yr olds) to even younger (4ish) and then onto helping to train to saddle, and handling foals. It is incredibly hard but rewarding.
I would suggest starting with a green but older horse, as while it seems like it should be easy to teach a baby it really isn't. Without the proper knowledge it can be very dangerous for both yourself and the horse. If you make it through teaching a green horse then you can decide if an actual baby is in your best interests. |
