The neglect laws
How can we make these stronger? I read more and more about neglected animals and it seems horses and other large farm type animals are topping the charts (esp. in TX). Is there anything we can do to better make these laws so people stop being stupid and getting an animal they cant take care of.

Lobbying?
If you start speaking out in town, county and state meetings/events, maybe you can get other people to lobby too. Start writing your legislators in your state along with talking to any animal organizations in your area. The more voices involved, the more the lawmakers will have to listen.

I am working to do the same in my area. I watched a show today that aired a man and his "brother" who ended up owning about five horses all of which were very under weight. It was pure neglect on their part and they each ended up light from what I think. 5 days in jail, 1000.00 fine each and 100 hours of community service.

Unfortunately right now hay prices are almost as bad as gas prices and they show no change anytime soon. While you can use grain as well, almost everyone needs hay sometime. Add into that the rising prices of gas and the fact that not every owner is a equine nutrition expert and you can see how they get underfed and neglected.
Lobbying and working with local authorities can help, but most neglect cases happen where noone will ever see them. |

Some of the ones I have seen on TV are in most places where your nearest neighbor could be 5+ miles away. I have seen very few that are close to any neighbors and those that have shocked me as they were almost in trailer parks. I don't get how you can even hide a horse for a day in a place that tiny.

I remember seeing an episode of an animal rescue show on Animal Planet not long ago. There was a horse whose ribs were like slats, the poor animal was so skinny. I felt so sorry for it. I'm not an animal activist but I don't believe in abusing animals like that either.
