The Life Span of Horses

I am just curious what the average life span of a healthy, well cared for horse is? I know that some have been known to live for many years but just wondered if horses actually have an average age limit?

There are a few in the clinic at the moment that are 18 to 22 and still sound pleasure horses or eventers. I'm sure they still have a few years left in them, though they do benefit from extra care like blankets and sweet feed.

I've ridden countless horses around the age of 20 over the years. Especially on the flat they are remarkably well suited to teaching younger kids and allowing them to learn on a steady horse thats been there and done it all.

As they age they do need more care for teeth and feet and in keeping weight on or regulating temperature but they can hold up pretty well.

My horse is 23 and very healthy. I think horses can live to about 35 years today. I had a pony that lived to about 35 years we think. I would say average is 32-35 years with good care. It also depends on the breed and how much abuse the horse that to it's joints during their lifetime, such as jumping. I know Quarter Horses can get navicular with their muscular bodies and small feet.
