I read somewhere that the Erskay ponies living today are not actual purebred Erskays. It seems that at one point there were no surviving stallions and two Highlands were bred to Erskay mares to continue the bloodline. Their offspring were bred with purebred Erskay mares to continue the bloodline. Following is a picture of a Erskay pony:

I dont think that picture loaded proper for me, so I snagged another offline here. Doesnt the mix breed make you think that something else might have happened, I mean it almost seemed like the breed was saved but kind of not really?

It does sound like it is a bit of a mixed breed. But regardless, I still think this is a beautiful creature! It looks very different from other horses and I'm glad there are still a few out there.
