In Arizona we have this problem with certain horses. Arizona has lots of sunshine and it would be unrealistic to apply sun screen lotion on a horse multiple times a day. You can actually buy sun sheets to cover the body of the horse. They also make special fly masks that have extra material to cover the nose. I have friends that have horses requiring this. Luckily, my horses are don't require this (knock on wood).

It is nice to have a horse blanket also when you have to ride. What we often do with our horses at noon is to tie them under a shade. And then after 4PM, my father would send me to untie them and let them roam inside their fence until evening around 6PM.
