Storms Spooking Horses

How do your horses react to thunder storms? Do they get hugely spooked, or are they ok if you stable them during the storm?

I can not vouch for all, but I end up getting spooked by storms and so does my aunt/uncles mini horse. Just for the most part the sounds, not so much the rain or lightening.

Again, same here. The noise really bothers her, she paces a lot. If I am there she is a lot calmer, but I have walked into the stable in the middle of a storm to see her pacing like she was trying to wear the floor out, whinnying and so on.

Most horses seem concerned about storms of some magnitude. Usually some hay will quiet them down but they still seem to grow wide eyed at large thunderclaps. I have heard stories about them being able to "taste" the electricity in the air during some lightening heavy storms.

My guy would get a little antsy but not overly spooked. He didn't like thunder though. I think it depends on the horse. Some are great and others are spooky.

I have never heard that they can taste the electricity, but certainly I could believe that they could taste the ozone smell in the air-even I can smell that as a storm is some distance off.

When storms can even spook people on occasion, you can definitely expect horses to be a bit antsy about them as well!

While storms can be beautiful, they can also be rather loud and frightening as well!

No wonder our horse friends get bothered by it!
