Sickness-Preparing for Death

My little dear got sick this past week. It was nothing serious, and the vet was able to help her return to her happy self. But it made me wonder-how do you prepare when you know that the end is approaching, when they are really sick?

I have never had this issue before so I can not advise you on what would be best other than spending as much time with your beloved horse as you can before its too late. Can your vet advise you at all?

I would think like any other pet

I'm not sure there is a way to fully prepare, to be honest. Pets I have lost in the past have been very hard, no matter whether I knew it was coming or not. Sometimes I think it helps a bit knowing they're better off if they were suffering but when they weren't it really is hard.

I have only ever experienced the passing of small animals in the past and I too found it rather hard to cope with. All told the passing of a horse must be infinitely harder.

I didn't talk about it with the vet since it didn't really cross my mind till later on (middle of the night insomnia issues!).

The passing of any pet can be hard. But when it is one that has been a constant companion, one that you enjoy spendiing time with. It is even harder. When I ride it's a time to escape the rest of the world, just me and the horse. My horse knows things I would never share with anyone else. To lose a friend or confident like that, whether expected or not, is hard. I don't think there is an easy way to go through it. You just have to let yourself go through the grieving process. For some that's easier than for others and it takes some longer than others.
