Running Martingale or Standing Martingale?

I've been riding a horse who has some issues keeping his head down and was thinking about using a martingale but can't decide which one to use. Any suggestions or preferences?

Normally I would be using a standing over fences and a running on the flat. A standing martingale is a fixed length and doesn't require you to do anything to work. A running martingale can be effected by you losing your seat and could spook your horse since a small movement in your hands could cause large flexing in the martingale and reins. There are some cases where this would be different but for a quick reference it normally works well.

My grandpa never believed in martingales. He said it didn't teach the horse to keep their head down it's more like a cover up. I'm not too familiar with them though. Can't they hurt the horse?
