Flu outbreak cancels show horse events

THE equine influenza (EI) outbreak has claimed another victim, with the cancellation of horse competition from next year's Royal Easter show in Sydney.
Organisers today said they were left with little choice when faced with uncertainty over when the statewide restrictions on horse transport would be lifted.

This is really bad for the horses, they could have the disease in just a matter of 2 to 5 days if they have exposed to it. I guess we should vaccinate our horses before this kind of outbreak happens to ensure that they are safe from diseases.

This is a very serious thing. Horse flu spread fast and horses pick it up very quikly. So it is always better to be safe than sorry.

One thing that has pussled me is that Australia is a lot in the news with the horse flu. Is there a reason for this? Or are my observations wrong, and this happens all over the world?

Though if Australia is more prune to this, is it because of a limited gene pool? or is it someother situation that makes them more prune?

There are always outbreaks among the horse community and more so when they are horses that are shown. Each barn has its own immunities due to the diseases they have been exposed to. When you bring different barns together you often find horses that are carriers, etc just like humans and spreading diseases.

EI is in most countries of the world. The reason the outbreak in Australia is in the news so much is because this is the first time in history that EI has been in Australia, and all the native horses have never encountered it before. In most endemic countries horses catch it every two years or so, or there are vaccines available.

Does anyone know when the last outbreak was in the states? I have always heard things about cows, but never horses.

This is very sad news, but unfortunately I guess they did not have any other choice in the matter.

Hopefully the event will be resumed as soon as the thread has passed.

Until then, I just hope the flu is contained.
