Retirement home for horses

What to do with an old, aging, sickly warrior? This is not my experience, I'm just wondering how does one deal with an old horse that is slowly going to its Rainbow Bridge? Is there anything like an old age home for horses.

That's an interesting question! I was reading that there are very few places where you can retire an old horse - especially if you are a private owner.

Some new owners rarely give consideration to the fact that horses can live for 30 years and not only will they cost a lot to keep but when they become and doddery just like grandma and grandpop, then there is going to be a problem of where to retire an old horse were he can be looked after properly until his natural end.

There are retirement places for old horses. They do tend to cost a bit, but the level of care is usually worth it for Princess to live like a queen until she passes. Many people place older horses as companion animals so long as they are easy keepers.

I had to smile when I saw this thread listed. When I was a girl my grandmother kept old horses. She started by taking one, and found it was a labor of love and kept taking more. She did boarding, so she wasn't responsible for the vet bills, which can be hefty for an old horse. I'm sure there are more people like her!
