Dandruff
What can you do for a horse who has dandruff? I hear that certain human shampoos will work, but is there anything specifically recommended? What human shampoos work the best? For example, I have a lot of Selsun Blue around the house that is not going to be used. Would this be safe, and would it work?

Normally even with people dandruff you need to determine the cause of the dandruff before you decide how to treat it. Some dandruff is only a symptom of something larger and requires a prescription shampoo and treatment not just OTC shampoos. I'd do some research or have your vet out to check into it.

I agree with kerrits. Dandruff can be a symptom of dry skin, psoriosis or a few other things. I know that with psoriosis the normal dandruff shampoos are too harsh and don't help. I'd assume it's the same with horse dandruff. if you find out what it is you'll be more able to fix it.

I've never heard of a horse having dandruff. Certain skin conditions yes, but they were always referred to by the name of the condition rather than dandruff-so that would lead to me thinking that yes you need to treat the cause not the symptom.

Learn something new every day
Having not had my horses forever, I'm still being surprises by the things I learn about horses. I have never seen any signs of dandruff, dry skin or anything like that with my two and honestly never even thought about it. I will keep these comments in mind if I ever encounter that type of problem.
