Protecting your horse from mother nature

The recent tragic tornadoes in the midwest have me wondering: what do you do with your horses in the face of such acts of nature? Board up the barn and hope for the best? So scary to think about not being able to save them!

We don't have tornados here, but there's a service Australians can register for to recieve bushfire alerts, or other disasters, so that they can move their horses or be notified if they're out on a trail or something. It was used during the EI outbreak too.

Honestly I don't think that the barns here would stand a chance next to the tornados that tear through sometimes locally. I would try, if possible, to move them out of the area if there was time, but if there isn't I think you would just have to pray.

I wouldn't think there's much you can do. Tornados are so unpredictable, they can take one house and leave the next. I'd move them out if I had advanced warning but otherwise, there's not much that one can do.

Other than trucking them far out of the warning zone there isn't much you can do in the face of such disasters. I know we had a cellar for tornadoes, so I suppose you could construct one that included a larger opening and ramp to hold your horses. Sort of like an underground barn?

Yes, a shelter might be possible, based around the sort of design of an air raid shelter. Coaxing the horse into that might be a bit of a strain, and you might face a huge cost in doing this. Given the unpredictability of the storms, I am not sure it would be worth the slight risk.

We don't really have storms like those around here. I think for my family, the uncles garage - which can hold 2 cars and 2 boats easy it setup to withstand large storms though, steel framed or something of the likes.
