Ausrufezeichen pregnant mare problem

Hello everyone, I'm having a problem with my horse. She's pregnant and the veterinarian says shes due in May 2008. Recently, she's eating less, and her mannerisms have changed. Is it just the pregnancy or is she sick? The vets on vacation so I thought I thought I'd ask the people on this forum since most of you are horse owners as well.

I think that pregnancy can take its tool on an animal or a human. Its possible she can get nauseas (like women can). How long has it been going on for? And how much has she lacked in foods compared to normal eat habits?

It has been going on for the last few weeks. She used to eat approximately 34 pounds of hay a day. Lately, it has gone down to 20 pounds of hay. Is this still a healthy amount?

I have read this, as a normal guideline, but I am having some issues finding information about pregnant ones.

Mature horses will generally consume 2 to 2.5 percent of their body weight in feed each day. For example, a 1,000 pound horse should consume approximately 20 to 25 pounds (90 percent dry matter) of feed per day.

This is one of those cases where it could be nothing but may be something. Usually as the weather starts to cool, horses will eat more to naturally bulk up for the winter, but if your mare's activity level drops..due to being prego's... her feeding habits might also drop off. Horses do not get morning sickness because they are not able to vomit (yuck!). They do get colic (stomach cramps) which can be quite serious.

Here's a few reasons a horse might cut back on her feed:

1. The feed...horses prefer sweet feed but need fiber.
2. The feed...horses will cut back on hay in favor of feed.
3. The hay...the mix can make a difference..have you changed the hay or gotten a new "load". Some horses have been known to refuse alfalfa hay when pregnant.
4. Boredom...Some horses eat more when they are bored...some eat less.
5. Activity..
6. Any change...changed stall, change of field, change of best horse buddy. They can also sulk over a person, cat, dog or whatever they are attached to, being gone.

But since your Mare is Pregnant and she's not acting "right" in your eyes, I would put in a call to the Vet to make sure all is well.
