Possible Issues With Used Equipment?

I've been looking into getting some equipment but don't really have the funds so I was thinking used might be a great way to get it within my budget. Are there any issues I should watch out for?

I have bought used in the past and wasn't really worried about it. Just make sure that the stuff is clean and in good condition. You don't want things that are so worn that they will need replacing inside of a month (unless it's almost free ).

I agree with Shush. As a somewhat beginning rider I've been looking around for used equipment as well. I just check the belts, straps, buckles for wear and of they look like they are in good shape I figure it's fine.

It usually isn't a problem. Make sure the leather is sound and that any ropes or such are not frayed. If the equipement is well cared for, it'll be fine.

I've recently had good luck

I had to replace a few pieces of tack that were really old and worn out. Since I really couldn't afford to get new right now, I started looking around to see if I could find what I needed used. All the tack I found for sale was in almost brand new condition. It seems a lot of people buy horses for themselves or their kids and then realize how much work it entails and how much money so they end up re-selling the horses. Then they have leftover tack and even grain and hay for sale. That is my experience in my area, at least.

So long as the stitching is sound, the metal isn't rusted or pitted, and the leather isn't dry-rotted or worn thin you should be ok. Things such as helmets shouldn't really be bought used unless you can trust the seller. Once its taken a knock from a fall it should be replaced so you have to trust them if they say they've never fallen in it or had it knocked against the wall or what not.

When I am able to buy a horse, used equipment is probably the way I will have to go, at least at first. I am glad to seen this question because I'm not sure I would have known what to look for, otherwise.

Sound advice on the helmets-I wouldn't buy a used helmet of any sort-riding, cycling, or anything. The risk is just too great. Otherwise, save some money where you can.

Its always best to check when you are purchasing anything that has been used before, this goes for yourself or animals. Shush I dont think I would get a used helmet either I am kind of picky with.
