Pain
I rode today for the first time in a couple of weeks. Now, I am in so much pain, I can barely move! My hips hurt, my legs ache, and I am no longer looking forward to going again.
Is there anything I can do as far as exercises to prepare me? Or is there a way or riding that is not so hard on the hips? |

It's like with any new, or more intensive work out-it's going to hurt until you build up the muscles you use for it. For a start, a gentle warm up and stretch before you ride will help so that there is less likelihood of something getting pulled.
Once you are finished, make sure to cool down and stretch again. Above that just keep at it; it gets better. |

Just get back on. Soak in salts and a rather hot bath when you're off, and take some tylenol or the like and get rest. Also lots fo stretching and gritting your teeth and baring it. I find its only a couple days before my muscles "remember" what they are supposed to do and stop hurting as much.

Thanks for the replies guys. It would seem that the biggest problem is how long I left it in between rides. If I am to get in condition for this then I have to keep at it, regularly, or else I will always feel like this after a good ride.

So is it ok to continue riding even the muscles are still aching? Or do we need to rest up first and when it is well then we can ride again? Becoming used to riding needs consistency so how often does a beginner needs to ride a horse? What are ways to make the riding easier besides the riding the horse itself?

You guys are scaring me
I have been looking around to find someplace around here that teaches riding classes (other than for children). I've always wanted to be around horses and learn to ride but grew up in the city so never had the chance. I hadn't even thought about it maybe being painful. Do you think I would be okay if I started out slowly? Is there exercises I could do to prepare myself?

don't be afraid, mustangsally! When you are taking lessons you are on for short jaunts, and will give your muscles time to build up.
If you are sore, you should keep riding (not that day, but in a few ), don't shy away for several weeks or you'll be back in the same position. |

Many places teach people of all ages, there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to learn. Just treat it like any other new exercise program and start slowly and gently. Work at it often and the suppleness and strength will increase.
