New horses

I should say newborns of calf, but you get my point. Has anyone here helped to deliver one before? If so what are some tips that would be good to share?

No but I would love to! This is one of the things I always loved seeing on 'All Creatures Great and Small'. There's nothing cuter than seeing a little one come into the world, all wobbly legged!

Your question got me thinking. In all my years, I have never been around a birthing. I doubt that I would want to be doing it though without a vet right there.

Lol, I have to be honest, seeing a colt born doesn't appeal to me. I didn't even want to watch my own three kids being born! However, if my help was needed, I would roll up my sleeves and wade on in!

I just love seeing any animal (or human) being born honestly. I don't think that there is anything more beautiful or touching than seeing a new life entering the world and starting to become autonomous. I love babies!

I've seen but not participated

I have been present at a couple of foalings when I was growing up. One was attended by a vet, one was just my grandma and me. The vet did all the work the first time but it was cool to watch. I was a bit grossed out but I was only about 9. The second time was when I was around 12 and my grandma did it by herself as it was the middle of the night and a surprise so the vet couldn't get there. I mostly watched that time, too, but my grandma knew just what to do. She had to reach in and turn the foal but the baby was fine (momma, too).

The idea of that kind of freaks me out. I wouldn't want to have to do the losing your arm bit. Otherwise it must be wonderful to witness.

I remember when I was getting ready to watch my first foaling at my uncle's ranch. I figured it would be messy and gross and I really didn't know if I would have the stomach for it. My main concern was getting sick in front of my cousins. I was only 10 years old. It was definitely messy but there was nothing gross about it at all. It was the most beautiful thing I had seen. I had never seen any animal or human born before.

I am not sure this is something I could handle or not. From what I have read up its a very challenging delivery compared to most other animals or even along the lines of humans.

I have seen only on TV or videos how hard the birthing process is for a horse and could you imagine that would be really something to need to keep your energy up for. I love the idea but I don't think it will happen for me any time soon.

I know that horse's giving birth is a very quick and strong process, and that if the foal isn't in the right position it can be difficult to fix because they have such long legs and necks to move around.

My mare, Lilly, is in foal now. She will be delivering probably by the end of the month. I am looking forward to this as it will be my first time to observe the foaling process. We are going to try to have a vet on hand, just in case. I will upload pictures of our new little one as soon as she/he arrives.

I have seen baby goats delivered on several occasions, but have never had the opportunity to see a horse birth. I would like to see this one day because it is such a blessing to see a new life come into the world.

Does the vet estimate a delivery date so that they can be on hand? Or is it known more certainly because of known insemination dates?

If you're a way out you might have trouble getting a vet out when you notice the mare start foaling, it's very quick from what I've heard. And mares have that little habbit of giving birth at 2 in the a.m.
