Motor Scooter

Considering getting a 30cc motor scooter to commute to work. In Canada here you don't need a special license to drive one and they are extremely miserly on fuel. I debate quality though. I don't see the point in riding one if it won't last very long. Does anyone here have any experience with them? They are on sale at Canadian Tire and the price isn't too bad.

I don't know much about scooters, as it was motorbikes that I was interested in. I would agree that currently it would seem a wonderfully economical way to travel, but have you considered the safety aspects?

That's a concern Montreal's drivers are famous or infamous depending on your point of view. I don't relish the thought of becoming roadkill. Incidentally we don't treat out of towners any different because of their license plates, we do all that stuff to each other.

Can't help you out on that one, sorry.

Do you have public transportation where you are? The people riding the bus to work near where I live has probably doubled since gas prices went up.

Some brands will last longer than others. Try to find a forum or website that compares the different brands and styles of scooters and you should find reviews. I have been thinking of getting a scooter, too, since I only have to travel about 10 miles to work. It would be so much cheaper on gas.

I had a Vespa before I had kids (when I was in college). In some areas it's legal to ride on the shoulder if you are on highways or freeways, I don't know about Canada though. I did mostly street riding, and kept to the backroads... actually faster for me anyway. I think Vespas or Hondas are good for lasting a while.

My husband got the gas powered one from Canadian Tire two years ago and it lasted about a year. He used it to travel about 16 km, 5 days a week. It was much cheaper than a car but I think those scooters are meant for pleasure. If you live fairly close to work, go for it. but too far and it probably won't last.

I think I would find it so difficult to commit to such a vehicle just because of the weather. If you have the luxury of staying home when it rains, fine but if you have to go to work no matter what, well, what a pain!
