Makeshift Derbys

When living out of the city some of us have taken our horses or borrowed one from a friend to have a little derby of our own on a friends land that is large enough. I think the last time I watched this was a couple years back when I had broken my leg and not able to attend. Anyone do little races like this in your area?

We have a local fair that does something like that. It's not big or anything, just a half dozen competitors and a bunch of watchers. I've never participated in one but would love to when I have more experience.

I remember attending one down south on a plantation. They did a traditional 1/4 mile race (ever wonder why quarter horses are called that?) from the front gate to the manor house for a small prize and a cup. I entered but didn't come close to placing.

I think if you can find the right place for it then it could be quite interesting even for children in school taking field trips, learning about the horses and then growing up to participate.

Live in the land of country fairs

I'm in New England and this is the land of country fairs. The small agricultural fairs are great for events like this. One that I went to every year growing up in Maine always had races and events. The events were more of the workhorse type like horse pulling but I watched everything I could. If you have any of these in your area, it would be a fun way to get involved in a race and you could even win a prize.
