Kicking

Are some horses more predisposed to kicking? My neighbor asked me the question recently and I told him I don't think so but would try to find out.

I'm not sure if they are particularly predisposed to kicking so much as liking their space and not being shy about telling others. This is important to be stopped when it comes to people and horses in most situations, being turned out in a herd being the exception.

I think kicking is more of a learned trait. If the horse isn't trained out of it, it can get worse. I don't think they're born to kick though. At most, maybe some have a kicking personality, if that makes sense.

My grandfather who had a small little farm in Mexico, use to tell me kicking was a way for a horse to communicate specially if he feels threaten. Like if a person the horse wasn't to familiar with got to close, the horse would feel the need to protect himself, thus start kicking. I hear these kicks are pretty painful, can even break a bone I'm sure. Ouch!
