Tetanus

Horses should be vaccinated against tetanus every year because they are particularly vulnerable to the toxin that the bacteria produce. If not vaccinated, then the horse can contract the bacteria into a deep wound, such as a nail wound or fot abscess. The toxin produced causes all the muscles to contract and be unable to relax, restricting movement. If the toxin spreads to the muscles used for breathing then the horse will be unable to breathe and will die.

Horses affected by tetanus may be noticed to have an abnormal, stiff stance or be found dead in the paddock.

Oh wow, I never thought about horses having tetanus. It would be terrible to go out to the stable and find one of our horses dead. I am going to have my dad get them vaccinated.

Is it every year that most are done? Tetanus is scary enough, but think about it there is a horse in a stable and if its a used stable (not made to start with for being a stable) who knows what could be hidden in there for an animal to find. Better safe than sorry!

It is recomended that horses are vaccinated against Tetanus every year, because yearly is easy to remember. In fact, the vaccine is effective for 2 years, but once a year is simpler to remember than once every two years.
