In Times of Drought

There are frequently drought conditions in this region in the summer-have been for the last four years at least. To say the least grazing isn't good.

How much of an increase in feeding requirements do you notice during the dry months?

Feeding is going to depend on your horse's activity level. If he just stands around grazing he's going to need less than a horse that is ridden daily or at least exercised. Most of the barns I've been at used a couple flakes of hay in the morning and evening as well as some grain if there was no grass to be had in the summer or winter.

I know some that also offer grain three times a day depending on the horses normal feeding. Some droughts have people worried about their yard. A friend has 200 acres and its just sitting there diminishing.

Our yard here is very bad too, but we don't have nearly that amount of land. We don't do anything about it of course because there are water restrictions-nor would we because it costs too much. However we do maintain a veggie patch, with grey water.
