How often should a horse take a bath?

I would like to know this because I don't want to overdone the bathing of my horse. I make sure that my horse take a bath once in 2 weeks. Do you think that would be ok?

I think it depends on the horse. If a horse is dirty, then a bath is fine, as long as the weather is good. I don't think you could actually overdo baths. Maybe if you bathed them everyday it would. Just don't bathe the horse unless he needs it.

I'm an "as needed" sort of horse mommy. Especially in the cooler months, I don't want to chill the horse unnecessarily. I don't think that they need baths all the time, just as I don't think you can overbathe them either.

So long as you aren't washing them enough to strip the natural oils in their skin and coat and keeping them from catching a chill, etc I doubt you are washing them too often. I've had to wash horses daily in the summer (or at least hose them off) at summer camps and never had an issue. Hypothetically if it rained for a week they would bathe for a week in the wild, right?

So what exactly could happen to the horse if you wash them too much? What would be the downside to this?

I haven't taken part much in this side of horse care yet.

This is what I am afraid that it might happen to them if I would bath them frequently. And just as Adelaide inquired, what would happen to a horse when its bathe frequently? What I'm thinking is that the horse might catch some skin diseases because the naturals are removed. Anyone who can clear this up?

I do this rarely, so far

I have a stream running through the property and during the warmer months the horses have always gone down there and played in the water. I've always figured that was their way of taking a bath. Other than hosing their legs down when they get muddy, I really don't do much else.

Grooming your horse regularly (at least once in two days), helps to keep the skin clean and it prevents hair tangling. Dust and tangled hair decrease your horse’s capacity to keep itself warm and also leads to skin diseases.

I don't think you would have too much of a problem now in the summer even if you did bathe the horse every day, just make sure you rinse thoroughly - but that frequency is not really unnecessary. I'd think that once every 2 weeks would be OK, unless the horse got very dirty.
