How much land?

How much land does one horse need? We are thinking of moving out of the 'burbs, into the country, which is really my dream. But we're looking at smaller pieces of land (around 3 acres). Is this enough for a horse (and a house, and stable, and garden, etc etc). How much land do you need to have for a horse?

On average, if the land is decent, one acre per horse is good. Poor quality land needs more, about two acres per horse. But the average is one for one.

I am thinking the aunt and uncle have about 6-8 acres in the back where all animals are kept. Even with a mini horse and two goats they do just fine running around. I never knew just 1 acre was enough for a horse though.

Horses do just fine on one acre, although slightly more is preferable so that you can have two pasture areas to switch between allowing for some growth between uses. You want the space more for food than exercise ability, as a ride around the space is just as good as a romp in a huge field. But so long as you take care of the field and supplement with hay if needed you should be just fine with one horse per acre.

Wow, that's great to know! I was thinking it was more, but I guess I've seen pastures that are for several horses. We're planning on getting a couple goats and some chickens too, so I can have fresh goat milk and eggs.
