We had a horse when I was a young child and friends of mine had horses but I have never actually owned one of my own. I've always heard it is expensive. Can those who actually own horses share what it truly costs to keep one of these beautiful animals?

There's a thread down below that breaks it up well. The short of it is it can cost up to $10,000 a year for a horse. That number would go down if you have your own barn/stable. It could go up if your horse gets sick. But a good average is $7,000 to $10,000 a year.
