As I see it, spurs are just riding aids like bits, crops and other tack. It is the misuse/abuse of them that is terribly offensive. A rider who loves and respects his horse would never stoop to abuse.

We used spurs now and then when finishing training on some horses at our ranch. Granted, they were not sharp but seemed to be effective.
