Horses that fly
Has anyone ever known someone that had to have a horse shipped? This might sound a little dumb, but how do you book a ticket for an animal this big? I know with a cat or dog you can just go to the airport with a pet carrier, but how does this work?

I believe cargo planes have "stalls" or "boxes" for such animals as can be lead into a cargo ship/plane as compared to animals such as a lion that goes in a box. But I second that its probably not very cheap. I imagine they have people who are trained in booking such tickets and explaining the rules that need to be followed.

It also depends on where you're shipping the horse to. Valuable thoroughbred stallions get flown around the world regularly so that they can serve two breeding seasons in one year. Horses get flown to the Olympics to compete. There are quarantine regulations and vaccinations that have to be considered too.

I went and looked into this out of curiosity. It would appear that the most common way to do this is by charter flight on planes specially outfitted with stalls for the horses. It is possible however to fly a horse on a commercial flight as cargo but this will be more rare.
For costs I found this as an example; that shipping a horse from LA to Lexington would cost $1,800-$2,500 each way and would cost more for out of country of course. Then you have to add on insurance. All told, a pricey business. |
