Horses Mane

How do you take care of your horse's mane? I find that if the mane gets too long it gets really dirty and matted looking from the horse rolling around on the ground. I really need to find a way to maintain it.

Braiding it is a really excellent way to keep it from getting matted, though it doesn't stop it from getting muddy. Still, it is easier to brush dry mud out from a braided mane than a tangled one.

I think braids are most common for many. I also know some that just keep the mane shorter, though it does look funny to me it helps to keep it kind of decent looking.

I just brush it out daily and wash it when it's dirty. I will also give it a trim (but not too short) when it looks straggely. I'm not a fan of braids, personal preference. I like the natural look.

Braids are the standard accepted way to keep a mane tamed on the right side and from getting tangles. They can be kind of odd looking on boy horses though. There are also name bands that go around the neck and keep the mane covered. Its generally good to keep it trimmed regularly (just like your own hair every 4-6 weeks). Cowboy magic and other products will help get the tangles out and keep it from tangling in the future.

Every 4-6 weeks? Dang. Frannie's lucky if she gets a trim every 4-6 MONTHS. She's scruffy looking, just like her mama.

Actually, I do braid her hair, but she's older and doesn't roll about a whole lot.

We've always braided our horses' manes and tails. The tails go in bags as well (socks work well too and are cheaper, lol. We've a couple neck wraps/mane band things that help keep them flat but we normally only use those if we're going to a show where its important. Otherwise braids are more than enough to keep it from being horribly tangled.
