Horses in mythology and Fantasy settings

Horses and horse-like creatures are everywhere!

Mythology and Fantasy stories are no exception. From heroic knights and wizards riding their trusty steads, to the famous one-horned Unicorn. And of course we can't forget Pegasus, the winged horse from Greco-Roman mythology. Another creature worth a mention is the "Nightmare" monster, which sometimes takes on the appearance of a Horse made out of flame. There are many other examples, but this is only for starters!

Be sure to share your own favorites with us in this thread!

Pegasus was always one of my favorite mythological creatures. What could be better than a flying horse. The best of all possible worlds. Riding that powerful horse, then being able to take to the sky when running at full speed just wasn't enough. What could be better?

Yeah, Pegasus was always one of my personal favorites as well

One myth I didn't see mentioned were the centaurs, who were like Horse Men.

Speaking of Centaurs reminds me I am overdue to replay Shining Force!

There were a number of things I forgot to mention, including Centaurs!

A few other fairly popular myths include undead horses, demon horses, and shadow horses. And there's still loads more I will probably smack myself for not mentioning earlier

Mythology and Fantasy stories are the first reasons I started to take an interest in horses. I remember I got into Mardi Gras Masks for abit, and the same place I used to order those from, had this insane black Pegasus that I just fell in love with. I had it for about 5 years, before my cat ended up having kittens, then one made its way to the dresser and then there it became a 1 winged Pegasus. I still kept it for about 3 years after that, but now I really have no clue where it went and until I noticed this thread, I hadn't thought about it in ages! Now, I need to get a replacement. Thanks for the nice flashback.

I always was fascinated with Centaurs. I can't really explain it. I love imagining if I were a centaur (which sounds a little weird).

We have here in the Philippines a myth about a monster. Its the opposite of a centaur. We call it tikbalang.

Centaurs have the lower body of horse, of which its feet and back are made of horse while the torso going up to the head is in human form. And if I'm not mistaken, the face a resemblance of an Elf.

Now, the tikbalang is the reverse of what centaur is. From shoulder going to the feet is the human part. Then the head part is a head of a horse. Old people tell us stories about them living in old big trees and they smoke big cigars.

My mom loves unicorns and especially the winged unicorns. She's read many different fantasy related novel series and books that have involve many of these creatures.

You know what would be really nice?

If we could track down specific stories, and a link to where you can read and/or buy them. Personally, I am always looking for more to read!

Unicorns have always been my weakness. Every year for Christmas, my sisters would try to find me something with a unicorn. They have mostly stopped because it got to hard to remember what I do have and to find something I didn’t have.

It's also quite amazing on how people can come up with amazing stories with their imaginations and how their minds can go this wild. I personally have an imagination - but not as wide as one as J. K. Tolken for example

I definitely fell in love with unicorns at a young age after watching the animated tale The Last Unicorn. Also reading Tolken at around age 7/8 who can't adore the horses in those novels? I'll have to dig out my box of books and write down some of my favorites I kept (most of the ones I had, haha) and the authors when I get a chance.
