Horses and Treats

Many people like to feed treats to their horses. Apples, carrots, sugar cubes and peppermints are just a few of the different treats some horses enjoy. Most vets don't recommentd treats due to the risk or colic or choke. Do you feed your horse treats? If so, what is your horse's favorite snack?

I know there are some people like you who have spoke with vets and been told the same, so now they prefer to make the homemade treats instead and grind the foods up to avoid the choking instead of a full apple and so on.

Anything you feed your horse can lead to colic or choking. Treats are not something that should be shoveled into your horse's mouth but fed sparingly. So long as you do that there is no issue with the use of treats as a reward or training reinforcement.

When I kept a horse at a boarding stable, I always brought him a carrot. He got two carrots every visit, one when I arrived and one just before I left.

Fortunately anything used as a treat can become a treat. We normally use carrots and apples although fresh cut grass is also a tempting treat. I had a friend who used the same hay cubes she used for hay replacement. Her horse thought they were green gold.
