What should I watch for as little signs that my horses are getting sick? I know lots of times with people you can tell a couple days before they really show any symptoms. For instance, being extra tired or lowered appetite. Do horses have telltale signs that something is up with them?

For me, the biggest sign has always been appetite, though that is a sign that what ever is ailing is fairly advanced. Sometimes I can get a glint by the look in the eye, but that's not fool proof.

Anything other than normal behaviour could be a sign of illness. If the horse isn't running around like she should, or not eating as much, anything not normal for that horse.

When I feel "off" and can tell I'm catching a cold, I load up on vitamin c and drink lots of water. Many times this seems to ward off whatever bug was trying to take hold and I don't end up getting sick. Is there any preventative measures you can recommend like this for horses?

I'm not sure if there is a preventive cure for horses for them to prevent from getting ill. I think we have to figure out first what kind of illness horses have before we give them some treatment. When the horses are not behaving like their normal ways, that means they have some problems.
