I've seen in old cowboy movies riders using whips, quirts and crops. Do people actually use them or they just used in the movies?

Several of the farmers and ranchers around where I live ride quite a bit. I've never seen them use whips or anything. Now and then, if they are riding an especially stubborn horse they may wear spurs on their boots.

Such things are most often used as training aids and no riding aids, the idea being that once the horse knows how to respond to the aid you can phase it out. Some people still use them for showing, but using training aids is like depending on a crutch.

So long as you train your horse to obey leg signals and reins you shouldn't need a crop or spurs forever unless you don't have quiet hands and legs and ruin the horse for them.
