So there is a thread about Horse Food Supplements. Now I wonder if a horse could be overdosed with vitamins and minerals? If that is possible, what will happen to the horse?
I wonder this myself sometimes as well, I think it could happen but not 100% sure on it. You would think it would be the same as for a human just maybe on a larger scale.

Does anyone know of a website with daily recommended allowances for horses like you can find for humans? I'll be talking to my vet about this soon anyway since one of my horses may have some sort of deficiency. I'm waiting to see if he recommends any feeding changes or supplements. I would like to know more about it before he comes so I don't feel totally stupid, though.

I know for humans that most vitamins and minerals are just passed through the body if there is too much to absorb, with the exception of iron, which is dangerous at high levels.
The thing about vitamins and supplements is it's relatively new science as far as studying what humans need. I can only imagine less research has been put into horses.
Yeah, I also believe that less studies are done on horses than on humans. But at least there are vets out there who already knows the needed nutrition of a horse. Or maybe even horse trainers for sports involving horses would know the enough nutrition for these horses.

While I'm not sure if there are recommended daily allowances like there are for humans, I'm sure there are recommended limits on each package for dosage. Probably related to the weight of your horse. I've never dealt much with supplements that would have an issue, more with wholistic supplements.

I found this topic interesting but with every horse supplement that you are buying, I think there is an instruction on how much supplement we need to give our horses. If we think that our horses need more supplement than it was stated in the instructions, better ask the advice of a vet before doing so.

I'd be concerned only if the horse was getting multiple times the amount of suppliments. There are vitamins that are harmful in large quantities. That's why it's important to only give the reccomended amount to the horse.
