My dad always swore that the horses we had on the ranch loved listening to different types of music. He would play country (old-school country, not the newer stuff that is more rock) for them on a regular basis, but when they were hurt, he would change it to rhythm and blues, and when one was about to birth, he would play softer music, like, water sounds. Any thoughts?

I think that horses would enjoy music, even have preferences for ceratain types. I've seen other animals show pleasure for music. My canary for instance, will sing really loud and long if I play soft rock, and only soft rock. Music is relaxing. I've heard that even plants grow better to music.

I think why not. Plants like music, so does my cat. I know some owners that will sing to their horses as well. :)

Horses that I have been around seem to like something soft to listen to, makes sense as they are so kind of quiet to begin with.

My old horse loved classical music, but would always get really wound up if I played Mozart. :) She seemed particularly fond of Debussey. Sometimes I would take my violin out and play for her, and she seemed to like it even though I am less than a virtuouso. ;)

I have no difficulty in believing that horses love music. Nature is full of music and there's a symphony of sounds in the wild outdoors. It's we, who introduced the noises and called it civilization.

Just like humans, I believe that animals are affected by music. Reading all of your comments has made me decide to take my boombox out to the stable for all to enjoy.:)

frannie that sounds like one picky horse that loves their classical. I know a cat that likes Beethoven too. Its funny how animals only like certain sounds.

I don't see why not. I bet they have preferences like us too. Maybe country music became a cowboy type music because the horses liked it, not because the humans did. It would be funny, though, to see a horse rocken' to metallica LOL.
