Hi,

I am just wondering if how many years can a regular well-bred horse stay? Or are there some kind of a horse breed that stays longer than the rest?

Just curious! Thanks.:D

There is a difference in life span based on Breed...Arabs have been known to make it to 30years....but on average anything over 18 is great. It does come down to the individual horse and the care he/she receives.:)

Has this average age ever changed through out history? Like we are told back in school that humans used to have shorter life spans that now?

I would imagine the life span might not have but the number of horses that make it to an older age has. Just like we have managed to save people who might have died from simple diseases before we have found ways to save horses with life threatening injuries thus allowing them to live more often. Horses in their twenties is pretty common where I am, although horses into their thirties isn't unheard of with proper care.

I find it completely odd that horses only live as long as cats, which are so much smaller. I have a 21 year old cat-and yet 18 is good, yet they are huge beasts. I wonder why that is.

Look at the difference between toy and giant breeds of dogs. A toy dog can easily live to be 15 or older while a giant breed may not make it to 10. However a cat and a horse are completely different when it comes to diet. A horse eats a totally vegetarian diet with grain and hay/grass while a cat is a carnivore eating meat and some grains as well. People are omnivores eating both. So it seems pretty safe to say that perhaps a horse's diet just isn't meant to sustain them for too long.

My aunt has had hers for 25 years. I don't know what breed it is, but she takes good care of it. I guess it depends on the horse

Wow, thanks for the info guys! Now, I knew better this time. I am really amazed about horses and it makes me wonder if horses can grow together and age as my kids will, later. :)
