Did anyone wlse know about this?

Overo (a paint horse pattern) Lethal White Syndrome is a recessive gene that horses can carry. If a foal is born with two of these genes then they are all white, and their intestine isn't developed so they die after a few days. It's not just overos that carry it.

I didn't know that. It's too bad. I really like paints and hope to breed my own someday so it's a good thing to know. Too bad it's fatal. What a shame.

I have a friend whose family breeds paints so I got to learn quite a bit about it. Its simply genetics that allow the horses to be spotted and sometimes don't work out properly.

I was almost crying reading that article. I hadn't heard of it before, but it is just so sad. Oddly it made me think of my own human child at birth when I read it, rather than my horses, but it's just terrible.

It just shows what happens with too much interbreeding.
