I have seen discussion already of when children were introduced to horses. But how did you start?

I have already taken my daughter to meet our horse, in fact she comes out with me at least once a week. How do you build up to having them ride?

I would imagine the best way would be to start with stable cleaning, tack care, and grooming and watching someone else (you) ride. Then if its something she wants to do she can start riding with you holding onto the lead of a halter and steering the horse while she focuses on balance and position.

When I started riding we learned about the anatomy of a horse, the parts of a saddle and bridle, then the proper way to groom and tack a horse. We managed one walk around the ring per person (we used only one horse) before the first lesson ended. The next one started with stall cleaning and tack cleaning before we got a couple turns around the arena (on our own mount instead of sharing). After that we were expected to be able to groom, tack and clean up our horses stall if needed with minimal help. Which helped us have respect that riding was a privilege we needed to earn not just a right because we paid for lessons or had a horse.

I think the love of horses is born in children .They either have it or they don't. I would never force children to ride if they did not want to. Horses are very smart and can sense things that people feel. When children are old enough to ask to be around horses in the best time to supervise them with horses.
