I feel very nervous up on a horse. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it, so I can solve the problem. I don't think it's actually a fear of the animal, I think it's a fear of heights. Not that I'm all that high up, but it's enough.

I guess I need to just soldier through it.....but I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts or similar experience.

Riding a horse at first can be incredibly scary, even if you've wanted to do it your entire life. Its high up, you have to trust the horse, and you just don't have the confidence you do on the ground. Taking it slow and steady will help, but don't be afraid to go back to something easier if you're not comfortable.

Oh I have been there and considering the first time I was on the horse he literally threw me off his back, didn't make my nervousness any better! Riding a horse is such an amazing feeling and I'm sure you will get there soon. Good Luck! Be a soldier.;)

The first time I went to go ride a horse I never even made it that far. I had an accident and twisted my ankle bad enough I was off my feet for two weeks. What a disappointment!

Once you get over the fear it will almost seem to come natural, take your time and don't rush though (otherwise you might get a twisted ankle or something). :D

Well, if you're not sure whether it's the horse or the heights, you could try walking the horse around the yard or brushing it. Then if it turns out it is the heights, these things will at least make you more comfortable with the horse and that might increase your trust when riding.
