After seeing the prices on treats from the tack store (even with occasional coupons) I decided I could find or invent some treats for Pumpkin that would save me oodles of cash in the long run I could spend on other things he needs. Here are a few of our favorites:
Apple Cookies
• 1 cup margarine
• 1 cup flour
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 1 cup bran
• 1 cup diced carrots
• 1 cup diced apples
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 2 cups quick-cooking dry oatmeal
• ½ cup applesauce
Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in applesauce. Combine flour, bran and baking soda. Blend into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, carrots, and apples. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets and bake at 350º for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove and cool. Makes about 4 dozen.

Halloween Horse Treat
Purchase a small pumpkin, take off top and hollow out pumpkin as you would for carving (seeds and flesh). Layer inside with things your horse likes such as apple slices, carrot pieces, molasses, grass, hay, sweet feed, bran, rolled oats, etc. Put lid back on and watch your horse enjoy "working" for his treat. Lots of horses will even eat the pumpkin.

I have found some of these myself, print them out for a friends horse. Here is a good one, least it sounds good, if you were a horse.

Oat 'n' Apple Chewies

1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce
1 cup oat bran cereal or ground oatmeal
½ cup all purpose flour (approx.)

Slice into squares while still warm. Keep chewies in the refrigerator in an air-tight container or bag.

Preheat oven to 350F Oil a 9inch x 9inch square cake pan
Spread the batter evenly in the cake pan and bake for 20-30 minutes. The batter will start to shrink away from the sides and it will be firm to the touch.

I must be hard on my horses. They only get a carrot or apple once in awhile. I don't have to time to fix myself food. It would be hard to find time to make my horse a treat.
