How do you groom your horses?

Well, here are some ways we groom our 2 horses. We first tie them with a halter and lead rope in order for them not to run away while grooming them. Then my father will check and clean the hooves while I'm brushing the body of our horses. Then after all is done, my father would bring out the wet cloth for wiping the eyes and nose.

What other ways or methods do you do in grooming your horses?

Most barns I rode at have cross ties, or a break away tie for each side of the halter. Then we normally went through a curry comb, hard brush, soft brush, then a finishing cloth. This was normally followed by the hoof pick and combing/brushing of the mane and often braiding to help train it to one side and help it grow longer without breakage. In the summer we then fly sprayed. For showing a show sheen/finishing spray and hoof or polish would be added.

I was curious about how you clean your horse. Should we follow a first-things-first method in grooming our horses? MY father always starts cleaning the hooves first before brushing the body. While in your case you first comb and brush the horse before picking the hooves?

The reason why I ask this is that when I asked my father what is the first thing to do when grooming a horse, his answer is the hooves. He told me that the horse will not be comfortable when something is stuck in the hooves while grooming it.

I have to laugh at myself sometimes. I have been around some WILD horses. I have had a broken arm and many bruises to prove it. I have come close to loosing my life after being trapped in a horse trailer with a horse gone wild. It would be nice if I could just cross tie a horse and there would be peace on earth. I was with an owner of horse at a stable that decide to click on the cross ties. Next thing I know, the horse goes wild and rips the ties out of the wall (suppose to be break away).

My horse, I taught to stand to get groomed. She never has a chance to spook and get in trouble. If she does decide to spook I am safe and I just pick up her lead rope outside the barn.
