We are planning on moving for a few months to get away from the winter come next november, and are wanting to take our horses with us. The altitude will be quite different, as will the temps. Any advice on how to acclimate the horses the best? Should we rest them more? Exercise less?

I suggest you have them get ample rest. If they are well rested you are assured that you'll have your horses acclimated. I hope that helps.:)

Go by how you feel. If you're tired out from the trip, the horse probably will be too. If you're going to a higher altitude, remember that if you have trouble catching your breath, that will be magnified in the horse. Give him a bit of time to rest and reassurance in his new surroundings.

Definitely take it slow and work up to a regular ride. Lots of walking and short bits of a faster gait, especially the trot will help to work the lungs and muscles to get used to the new altitude.

Thanks. Will it take a different amount of time for him to acclimate? I know for people, if you are in good shape, and a smaller person, you acclimate faster. But, what I worry about, is, if I am in as good of shape as he is, and he is multiple times larger body mass than i am, will it take him that same multiple amount of time to acclimate?
