A friend of mine was in 4H group growing up in rural Maine. She learned to ride and care for horses through that organization as well as working with other animals. I haven't heard anything about 4H since I was a kid so am wondering if the organization is still in operation?

My daughter is in 4H here in Canada. This sector has been around for 80 years here. She's doing dairy this year and when whe's old enough to, she'll be doing horse. It's still in full swing.

Yep, we have them here in the states too! (I'm in the Northwest). I'll be starting my 3.5 year old in the Fall. I highly recommend it.

We have 4H fairs around here that I attend fairly often.

Every time I go, I really enjoy myself too !

There are always many exciting things for me to see and do, along with some arts and crafts and such.

The next one can't come long enough!

4-H, FFA, and Pony Club are all still common, although may not be as highly publicized in non-agricultural areas. A simple search on http://www.4-h.org/ should turn up your closest group or what it would take to start one.

Especially thanks to haute_ecole for the great link. There are three groups not too far from me. I'm going to give the information to a couple of friends who wanted to find something like this for their children to get involved with. One of them has a 6-year old daughter who is quite determined to become a vet someday. She already brings in strays to take care of.

We have active clubs in our area too but I think the kids dont have as much access to horses as they used to. I think it's more a matter of funding and availability of horses.

I was in 4h as a kid and loved it. It teaches so much that just doesn't seem to be there anymore. Respect, care for animals, and other good qualities. I wish more kids could join it.

I have noticed that some schools that could even be in the same state do or do not have 4H which is kind of confusing for me. Doesn't it seem like every school should have one?

My son told me that we do have a 4h program in our county and I know he is in ffa- this will be his second year in highschool and ffa. He really enjoys it.

We still have 4-H fairs around here regularly, but I have not been to one for about two years now.

The next time they do one, I am planning on trying to go however.

They have always been enjoyable for me, and i'm sure my next one will be as well.

I remember the 4H fairs that our county used to have when I was little. I always wanted to be in 4H but it just never seemed to happen.

I know some schools only do FFA if its out of the city, and 4H in the city. I'm not sure what is in my town but I will need to find out soon enough when my kids start school.

I always enjoyed 4-H when I was a kid and still enjoy going to the fairs and watching the kids compete. Here in the Midwest, 4-H is still very popular.

4-H is not often attached to schools like FFA. Sometimes it is, but FFA is more likely to be seen, long with other "future" programs. Its normally pretty easy to get a 4-H program started, kind of like scouting. You need some people to participate and a willing sacrifice-I mean parent to lead them. More than one is preferable.

Yes, the 4H programs are still alive and kicking! My daughters are in the program and they love it. I was in the program as well when I was younger.

We have 4H and FFA here in my county, but it seems like they focus more on cattle and goats. In August, we'll have our county fair and that's usually when the kids get to show the goats and cattle they've raised over the past year. It would be great if they included horses too, but I have never seen any of the kids show them.
