Horse power

Can someone explain this to me, is 1HP = to one full adult sized horse? I have always wondered this, and no idea how it all came to be.

According to this, 1 horsepower equals 33,000 foot pounds per minute. Otherwise, it confused me greatly. I found this website on it. It also says that one horsepower is equal to 746 watts.
I always thought there was a more easily explained measurement.

It has to have a fairly direct relationship. It was my belief that the horse power measurement came about at the change over from horse to motor driven power and was used as a comparison was it not? And it therefore has to be fairly straight forward, even if it has a scientific measurement too.

As I understood it, one horse power was a bit more than the pulling power of one large horse, not a direct comparason. That's partly because it's hard to get a good idea about the strength of the stongest horse, so they rounded up and added a bit.

This seems confusing for us all maybe. And watts? Now I have to go back to science class. I will check to see if I can find a simple answer for this and let you all know, its always drove me nuts too.

1hp is no where near the energy output of one horse. I don't know how they came up with it. The reason I know it isn't is because of a high school science experiment. I set a school stair climbing record from the first floor to the fourth in 12.2 seconds. With the help of the science instructor my energy out put was calculated to be just under or just over (and I can't remember which) 2hp. I'm a big guy but I ain't no horse. I guarantee that a 15hp lawn tractor would lose a tug-of-war with 15 horses.

I can honestly say I have never though of this until about 30 seconds ago as I was reading the thread. Very insightful post, I learned lots. Best thing is now I have some random trivia for my friends.

Well I now more confused than I thought possible. Where does a watt come into this?! Watts reflect the amount of power that is used up in a certain period of time, rather than being a measure of strength.

I'm with ridesalot. I never even thought abou this subject. Though I wish I could say I'm feeling enlightened on the issue, instead of just confused!
