Horse Drawn Carriage Tours?

I lived in Charleston, SC for a while and was completely repulsed by the sight of horses being made to pull carriages for tours of the city. A horse is not meant to be "shackled" to a carriage and forced to walk around all day in the hot, humid summers of SC. I would like to think these tour company's treat their horses well, but it is sad to see these beautiful creatures forced to "work" in this way.

I think that it is sad also the ones that are forced to walk on the concrete in the city. I was in eastern Oregon last summer and went on a carriage ride. It was throught the rolling hills on a dirt trail. It was so wonderful and relaxing. Those horses there I felt were treated fairly and well taken care of.

It really depends on the location and the way the horse is treated. To many horses, it's simply a game. They want to please the master. Horses are work animals. They work when we ride them and when farmers use(d) them for tilling the fields.

My main issue is the hard concrete. It has to be hard on their hooves. A walk through the country side would be wonderful though.
